Photo by drone on the construction site of the Grand Palais Éphémère in Paris

The MÉDIACO company asked us to intervene at the Champ de Mars in Paris to produce aerial photos illustrating its crane activity on the construction site of the Grand Palais Ephémère.

Photo and video shots by drone have become essential to highlight the spectacular interventions on construction sites. In Paris as in the Departments of Ile-de-France, the professional drone pilotS and drone operators have the ability to produce aerial images for the institutional and commercial communication needs of various stakeholders. As part of long-term site monitoring or simply to produce a one-off report, the drone is the most effective tool to take close-up aerial photos and video shots.

MÉDIACO, No. 1 in lifting, is supporting the MATHIS company in setting up the 46 wooden arches that make up the self-supporting structure of this building built by GL Events and designed by Wilmotte & Associés.

The two vocations of the Grand Palais Éphémère

  • Replace the Grand Palace during its renovation period.

  • Host events of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Cultural events and events of all kinds which are usually organized under the nave of the Grand Palais will take place inside this building until 2024. During the 2024 Olympics, the Grand Palais and its temporary version will host several competitions. For now, there is talks of judo, wrestling, taekwondo, fencing and table tennis for the Olympic and Paralympic events.

A location identification is essential

In order to fill up the overflight authorization application file for the capital city and submit it to the Paris Police headquarters, we had to go on site to assess the environment, understand and identify the perimeter of construction site, and decide on the drone take-off and landing areas locations. Indeed, the drone operator who asks the Paris Police headquarters to get he authorization to call over a drone pilot (some speak of a drone operator), must, among other documents, provide a plan which precisely presents the overflown area, the perimeter of the site where the mission is taking place and the positions of the remote pilot and the drone at take-off. That's a lot to decide before even doing the photo report. We took advantage of the unobstructed 360-degree view from the cockpit of one of our client Médiaco's cranes to understand the site's footprint and correctly complete our "safety plan" document.

An S3 approved drone for aerial shots in the city

Although displaying a take-off weight of 4.5 kg, our DJI Inspire2 drone equipped with parachutes is approved to fly in urban areas. This machine also has an interchangeable lens photo sensor. We thus offer a report of aerial photos that mixes several focal lengths, from 24 to 90mm. In this way, we avoid providing only wide frames which remain very typical of photos taken by drone.
